one-eyed Jack

our 7-week old, badger-faced livestock guardian dog. DOB = 1/22/11.

*
Sandy http://springlakefarm.blogspot.com/ and I went on a road trip to Nickelsville, VA on Monday. Sandy was going to buy two livestock-gaurdian puppies and I just going along for the ride.

the Mama dog = Anatolian, Great Pyrenees and Akbash cross
the Daddy dog, Snowflake = 100% Great Pyrenees

*
Sandy and Snowflake. Look at the feet on SnowFlake.

*
I'm not sure what happened, but on the return trip, Sandy had bought one puppy, and I had bought a puppy from Travis.

Sandy bought the two-eyed white one.

*
Jack with Corky and Fizz. Jack is very skiddish around us and seems content around the goats; exacty the traits we're looking for in a livestock-guardian dog. He whimpers now when the little bucklings leave him alone.

*
Jack was born with only one eye.

I arrived home last night lugging the puppy and Mike laughed, "what fool would buy a one-eyed livestock-guardian dog?"

*
Some of the neighbors stopped by saying they were welcoming him but they were really the kind of nosy folks who wanted to find out about his business.

Jack was glad to see 'em move on.

  5. OMG! If that's not the cutest, most adorable puppy I have ever seen (at least lately), I don't know what is! He is absolutely beautiful. I doubt that having only one eye should hurt his prowess as a guardian at all.

I don't know how you can keep him outside with the goats! He'd be sleeping in my bed (right next to Sable (the LGD) and Bella (the herding dog), every night!

  6. Lol, that is too funny..."I don't know what happened, Mike. I found myself in the truck with this puppy on my lap!" I don't know how you kept it to just one; they were all so cute! Bet those chickens won't be intimidating him for long.

  7. my kind a woman!! And you won't regret it one bit..those guard dogs have all sorts of hidden talents. Gorgeous puppy and one that was obviously raised right with the animals really instills all those qualities. Can't wait to read most posts on you puppy as he gets HUGE!!

  9. He is adorable! And, I don't think they need two eyes to be good guard dogs for the livestock. Congratulations!

  14. Awwwwwwww, he'll do a wonderful job, even if he only has one eye. It's all about their ears anyway.

  15. Aw, Joanne - he's a beauty. What a wonderful face. It's so amazing to me that he already knows his place with the goats, even being as young as he is.
I agree with goatgirl - Mike's gonna be a fan of this good boy in no time!
Congrats on the new addition to the family!! :-)
