The movie, Cold Mountain, is a real mountain located within the Pisgah National Forest, Haywood County, North Carolina, which is south of here near Asheville. Have you ever hiked the Appalachian Trail? well, neither has South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
The three landforms of North Carolina make up the three major geographic regions of the state: the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, and the Mountains.
We have several ski resorts in this area - Appalachian Ski, Ski Beech, Ski Sugar, and Hawksnest. Presently at Ski Sugar:

Local weatherman - With winds gusting to 50 mph tonight, wind chills will be in the -5 to -15 range, snow showers will increase tonight through Tuesday morning.

Hey! We're practically neighbors! we live in Zone 6, too. We are in the mountains at 7,000ft elevation on the edge of the Eastern High Plains of New Mexico.
What always strikes me about living up here is what a huge difference in weather we can have from those that live in the valley of Albuquerque below us at 5,000ft elevation. It can be sunny and in the 50's down there, and up here, just 30 minutes east we are buried under snow and temps in the low 20's.
The weather reports are warning us that an Arctic Blast is on it's way into our area starting tomorrow and will bring temps below zero with more snow.
I'm hoping it's not as bad as they say and that it moves in and moves out quickly.
I've always wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail, but life got in the way. I've read a number of books about the AT and did alot of research and planning at one time. Maybe I can still hike parts of it as I get older....if my knees and hips hold out.
Do you guys live close to the AT? Do you see many hikers moving along the trail or coming into the towns to stock up and get showers?
I think it would be neat to have a hostel type of place along the AT where I could host hikers and feed them and give them a break fro hiking for a night. :)
We used to live in Rock Hills, SC for 7 years. We always got snow there. And one year we ended up with 14"! Noone believed me that South Carolina could get that much snow. lol!
But everyone is also surprised that parts of New Mexico can get as much snow as we do every year. We've got some awesome ski areas here, too.
